Oil Edges Up Despite Easing Supply Worries and Gold Bounces 0.72% as the 10-Year Slips

USO rose 0.64% Tuesday to $144.91, closing near its $145.09 high after opening at $142.32. WTI's November contract settled near $89.92, up 0.54%, per Yahoo Finance. GLD rose 0.72% to $382.27; SLV rose 0.58% to $55.45.

Oil: the narrative and the tape disagree
Yahoo Finance's wrap said crude retreated on resilient Middle East exports and the G7 reserve release, yet its own quote table showed WTI's November contract up 0.54% at $89.92. USO's gain matches the quote
USO traded as low as $141.76, under the Sept. 29 low of $143.29, before closing at $144.91
TradingEconomics showed Brent at $100.84, up 0.51%; a WTI figure on the same site (down 1.6%, near $88) does not match Yahoo's or USO's move and is not used
The backdrop is unchanged from Monday: Aramco's $5-under-benchmark November price for Asia, per Rigzone, and Iran's Sunday statement that the strait stays closed until its conditions are met, per Al Jazeera
Gold: a bounce, still far under the 200-day
Gold futures settled at $4,197.10, up 0.24%, per Yahoo Finance's quote table. GLD's 0.72% gain is larger and we could not reconcile the gap
GLD closed under its 200-day average ($415.99) for the 27th straight session, 8.1% below it
Kitco cited yields near multi-decade highs as the cap on gold Monday; the 10-year eased to 5.27% Tuesday. Hike odds are about 22%

Flagged — unverified or single-sourced
  • No Wednesday pre-market data: search results for Oct. 7 futures contradicted themselves (one snippet paired an S&P figure with an implausible Nasdaq level and described a Monday session), so none are used. All prices are Tuesday's close.
  • Index levels (S&P 500 7,818.93, Dow 51,521.28, Russell 2000 2,830.30, Nasdaq about 27,600) come from Yahoo Finance; one listing shows the Nasdaq at 27,599.79 against Yahoo's 27,599.89, a 0.10-point gap. The 10-year's 5.27% is Yahoo's figure; another listing put the settle at 5.275%.
  • Oil: Yahoo's narrative (prices retreated) conflicts with its quote table (WTI +0.54%). USO's +0.64% is computed from FMP closes and agrees with the table. TradingEconomics showed WTI down 1.6% and Brent up 0.5%, and we use only its Brent figure, single-sourced.
  • Gold futures (+0.24%, Yahoo) and GLD (+0.72%, FMP closes) disagree and we did not reconcile them. A Kitco wrap for Tuesday was not retrievable, so no Kitco figure is used for gold.
  • October hike odds of about 22% (CME FedWatch via Investing.com) may predate Tuesday's session. The September quarter-point hike and its unanimity come from a search-result summary of Investinglive's preview; we did not confirm them against the FOMC statement.
  • Yahoo's wrap listed an August trade balance of −$89.8 billion; search results for the Commerce Department release did not confirm the figure, so it is not used. Marvell's intraday gain of about 8% in news coverage compares with 5.8% at the close.
  • FMP's daily "changePercent" field disagreed with close-to-close math for several tickers (SPY showed 0.12% against a computed 0.55%), and one FMP news call timed out, so every daily move here is computed from closes.

Constellation Energy Jumps 12% on a Google Nuclear Agreement; Storage Names Give Back Monday's Bounce

Tuesday's tofu-agent batch flagged CHRW, MELI, MRNA, NUE and PTC. Its stated moves are Monday's, so each name is re-priced for Tuesday from FMP closes and checked against dated news. Constellation Energy and the storage names were added by us.

CEG
Constellation Energy +12.25% ($267.62 → $300.40) Confirmed
Google signed a 20-year power purchase agreement covering 890 megawatts of new nuclear capacity on the PJM grid, with funding for upgrades at eleven units, per Invezz and GuruFocus. Volume was 13.2 million shares against 3.5 million Monday. Not in the tofu-agent batch; we added it.
Tue Oct 6
STX / WDC
Seagate −9.18% ($887.09 → $805.63); Western Digital −6.93% ($441.64 → $411.04) Confirmed
Toshiba's plan to double hard-drive output and a reported Seagate–Toshiba contest for TDK's magnetic-heads unit drove a second leg down, per 24/7 Wall St. Skeptics note the added capacity takes years to arrive. Both now sit under Friday's closes ($848.99 and $415.29), erasing Monday's rebound.
Tue Oct 6
MRNA
Moderna −7.75% ($203.21 → $187.46) after +6.95% Monday; Novavax −9.87% Confirmed
The WHO called the risk from a suspected pneumonic plague death in Russia low, reversing Monday's scare trade, per Yahoo Finance and Benzinga. The Monday gain was fully given back.
Tue Oct 6
CHRW
C.H. Robinson −3.95% ($140.61 → $135.05) after −10.85% Monday Confirmed
The pending RXO acquisition pays $17.25 in cash plus 0.0856 CHRW shares per RXO share, per a Business Wire notice, and Zacks put it at $5.8 billion. Bank of America cut its target to $203 from $226 on dilution, and buybacks pause while about $3 billion of debt is added, per The Motley Fool. Management cites $300 million in synergies.
Mon Oct 5
MELI
MercadoLibre +9.67% Monday ($1,696.56 → $1,860.61), −0.14% Tuesday ($1,857.99) Partial
Aggregators cited New Street's Buy rating with a $2,450 target, a $1 billion 10-year note sale at 5.85%, and Brazil's first-round election result, per Benzinga and GuruFocus. We could not tie the election link to a primary source.
Mon Oct 5
NUE
Nucor +4.58% Monday ($240.39 → $251.41), −0.14% Tuesday ($251.07) Partial
24/7 Wall St. tied the steel group's gains to Cleveland-Cliffs' jump as Stelco fallout faded ahead of its Oct. 19 earnings. We found no Nucor-specific item.
Mon Oct 5
PTC
PTC +33.5% Monday, +0.38% Tuesday to $193.00 Confirmed
Schneider Electric's $205-a-share cash offer values PTC at $22.6 billion, per Axios and Euronext. The stock closed 5.9% under the offer, from 6.2% Monday.
How this list is built
  • Source: tofu-agent's October 6 batch (CHRW, MELI, MRNA, NUE, PTC), with confidence scores of 0.30 to 0.43. Every signal was tagged "unexplained_move"; the attached discourse headlines, such as a Burry piece, a Zacks growth note and sector roundups, were not treated as causes. Duplicate signals for each name were counted once.
  • The batch's stated moves match Monday's closes (CHRW −10.8%, MELI +9.7%, MRNA +6.9%, NUE +4.6%, PTC +33.5%), not Tuesday's, so we re-priced Tuesday from FMP close-to-close data. The PTC headline's $23.7 billion deal value differs from the $22.6 billion in Axios and Euronext; we use the latter.
  • Constellation's rally was also credited to an Amazon deal in two aggregator headlines; Invezz, GuruFocus and The Motley Fool point to Google, and we follow them. A deal value of $4.3 billion in one wrap summary was not found in any source and is omitted.
  • Five names (CEG, STX/WDC, MRNA, CHRW, PTC) have a confirmed catalyst, MercadoLibre and Nucor are partial, and none is flagged Unexplained. Sell-side and intraday figures differ from closes: 24/7 Wall St. put Western Digital at −6% and Seagate at −8% intraday, against −6.93% and −9.18% at the close.

Leadership Rotated Inside Semiconductors While the Bond Market Gave Stocks Room

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed at records as the 10-year slipped to 5.27%. Inside chips, AI networking and custom silicon rose while memory, Intel and storage fell, and small caps lagged.

01
A softer 10-year, a record S&P 500
The 10-year settled near 5.27% from Monday's 5.31%, and the S&P 500 and Nasdaq both closed at records. The Russell 2000 fell 0.59%, so small caps did not follow. ISM prices at 74.0 and hike odds near 22% still frame Wednesday's minutes.
02
Marvell moved the group, not SMH
Marvell's $20 billion outlook lifted Marvell 5.8%, Broadcom 3.7% and AMD 2.8%, reversing AMD's 0.3% loss Monday. Micron (−1.7%), Intel (−3.2%) and TSMC (−0.7%) offset them, leaving SMH down 0.22% and 5.4% under its June high.
03
Storage gave back its rebound
Seagate fell 9.2% and Western Digital 6.9%, both closing under Friday's levels, as Toshiba's drive expansion and the TDK heads contest outweighed Monday's Bernstein and Morgan Stanley defense. Sandisk fell 2.6%.
04
Oil and gold both rose as the yield eased
USO rose 0.64% after opening at $142.32 and GLD rose 0.72%, its highest close since Oct. 1, on the day the 10-year slipped. GLD is still 8.1% under its 200-day average.
05
Power joined the AI trade
Constellation rose 12.3% on a Google nuclear agreement in the same session Marvell lifted its AI outlook; both are data-center demand stories. Constellation's volume was 13.2 million shares, almost four times Monday's.

Wednesday's minutes are the test. A hawkish read with ISM prices at 74.0 would put the 10-year back above 5.3% and test records built on a narrow base; a patient one would give small caps and gold their first shared reason to join.

06
Where This Leaves Positioning
SPY $779
Up 0.55% Tuesday; the $781.62 intraday high is a new high for the year and the line to clear. Tuesday's $777.96 low is support, then Monday's $769.63 low.
SMH $632.50
Down 0.22% Tuesday despite AMD, Broadcom and Marvell. Tuesday's $639.47 high is resistance, then the June 22 close of $668.91. Tuesday's $631.49 low, Monday's $626.96 low and Oct. 1's $607.25 low are support, with the 50-day average at $572.98 below.
GLD $382
Up 0.72% Tuesday, 27th straight close under the 200-day average ($415.99). Tuesday's $379.79 and Monday's $377.98 lows, then the Sept. 28 low of $376.88, are support. Oct. 2's $385.22 high is resistance, then the Sept. 25 close of $393.41.
USO $145
Up 0.64% Tuesday. Tuesday's $141.76 low and Friday's $142.07 low are support, with the 50-day average at $137.92 below. Tuesday's $145.09 high is resistance, then Friday's $148.07 and Oct. 1's $150.67 highs.
This week
Fed minutes Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. ET, then jobless claims and PepsiCo and Delta earnings Thursday, with the 10-year near 5.27% and Hormuz headlines setting the tone. AMD reports Nov. 3.
The minutes lean patient and the 10-year keeps easing
Breadth catches up to the records
A patient reading would hold October odds near 22% and keep the 10-year under 5.3%, giving small caps and gold a joint reason to rally.
Read-through: SPY above $781.62, SMH above $639.47, GLD above $385.22.
The minutes read hawkish and the 10-year retakes 5.3%
The record base narrows
With ISM prices at 74.0, a hawkish tone could push yields back above Monday's 5.31% and test indexes the Russell 2000 did not confirm.
Read-through: SPY under $777.96, SMH under $626.96, GLD under $376.88.
Base case
The S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed at records as the 10-year eased, and chip leadership shifted to AMD, Broadcom and Marvell, but SMH slipped as memory, Intel and storage fell. Wednesday's minutes decide whether the rally broadens.

Equities: SPY rose 0.55% to $779.09 and QQQ 0.46% to $759.66; SMH fell 0.22% to $632.50. Marvell's outlook lifted AMD, Broadcom and itself while Micron, Intel and storage fell. The Russell 2000 lost 0.59%.

Commodities: USO rose 0.64% to $144.91 and GLD 0.72% to $382.27, still under its 200-day average.

FX & policy: USD/JPY closed at ¥158.23. The 10-year settled near 5.27%, and October hike odds sit near 22%.

The wildcard: Hormuz. Iran says the strait stays closed while Kpler's flow data showed recovery, and WTI sits near $90.
