The minutes of the Sept. 15–16 meeting, released Wednesday, showed unanimous support for September's hike to 3.75%–4.00%, with most participants expecting another by year-end. The next meeting is Oct. 27–28.

FED
Fed minutes: another hike likely by year-end, no date Occurred
Most participants judged a further increase likely appropriate by year-end, per Investinglive and CNBC, and Bloomberg reported all officials backed September's hike. WSJ said some senior officials suggested a move could wait until December. Staff put August headline PCE inflation at 3.8% and core at 3.4%, per Investinglive.

Flagged — unverified or single-sourced
  • No Thursday pre-market data: searches for Oct. 8 futures returned stale or unrelated articles, one describing a different year's trade-policy backdrop, so none are used. FMP has no Oct. 8 bar yet, and its aftermarket quotes for SPY, QQQ, SMH, Nvidia and Micron sit within about 0.4% of Wednesday's closes. All prices are Wednesday's close.
  • Index levels (S&P 500 7,801.77, Dow 51,179.87, Nasdaq 27,538.69, Russell 2000 2,793.20) come from Yahoo Finance; Invezz gave the same Dow close. Yahoo's table showed the 10-year at 5.28%, up 0.01, while its text said it was back near 5.31%, so we say near 5.3%.
  • Oil: Yahoo's quote table showed WTI up 0.67% at $88.87, which conflicts with CNBC's $88.28 settle (down $1.16). CNBC's page returned a 403, so its figures and the UKMTO count come from search-result summaries. Brent's $100.20 matches FMP's series. USO's −0.69% is computed from FMP closes.
  • Gold: Yahoo's table showed gold at $4,135.30, down 0.13%, against −1.3% from Reuters via Kitco and −1.11% in FMP's front-month series ($4,187.10 to $4,140.70). We use the latter two. GLD's −1.67% is larger than spot's −1.3% and we did not reconcile the gap.
  • December hike odds of 84% are Reuters via Kitco. The October-hold odds above 78% come from a search summary of a Yahoo Finance gold column, not traced to CME. Investinglive reported a 12-0 vote and Bloomberg said all 19 participants backed the hike; we say unanimous.
  • Micron's $3,000 target and the 19 times multiple come from search summaries of Investing.com, GuruFocus and TipRanks. Other search summaries of Wednesday's chip trading contradicted FMP closes (one had AMD down 4.9% and Micron down 5.9%, another AMD up over 10%) and were discarded.
  • FMP's daily "changePercent" field disagreed with close-to-close math again (SPY showed +0.19% against a computed −0.24%), so every daily move here is computed from closes. Last edition printed USD/JPY at ¥158.23 for Tuesday; FMP's series now shows ¥158.09 and we use it.

MU
Micron +4.06% ($1,045.56 → $1,088.00) Confirmed
D.A. Davidson's $3,000 target, the Street's highest, drove the move, per Investing.com and GuruFocus. It traded 30.2 million shares between $1,011.42 and $1,089.20. Storage was mixed: Sandisk +1.9%, Seagate +0.2%, Western Digital −1.4%. Not in the tofu-agent batch; we added it.
Tue Oct 6
CTVA
Corteva +12.27% Tuesday ($12.39 → $13.91), +3.88% Wednesday to $14.45 Confirmed
JPMorgan upgraded the stock to Overweight with a $19 target, and Corteva joined the S&P MidCap 400, per The Motley Fool and Defense World. The crop-protection company completed its Vylor seed spin-off on Oct. 1, per Benzinga. Wednesday's close is above the $14.44 52-week high GuruFocus cited.
Tue Oct 6
CIEN
Ciena +13.85% Tuesday ($389.69 → $443.65), +0.63% Wednesday to $446.45 Partial
24/7 Wall St. tied the surge to AI networking demand, with Arista up 4% and Cisco 3% that day. We found no Ciena-specific item, and Tuesday's volume of 6.4 million shares was about 2.6 times Monday's.
Tue Oct 6
FIX
Comfort Systems +6.12% Tuesday ($1,713.07 → $1,817.96), −4.21% Wednesday ($1,741.36) Unexplained
We found no catalyst for Tuesday's gain; the attached headline was a fund's 13F position cut. Wednesday's drop came alongside GE Vernova (−3.1%), Bloom Energy (−3.1%) and Vertiv (−2.6%), per Zacks and FMP closes.
Wed Oct 7
MRNA
Moderna +4.81% ($187.46 → $196.48) after −7.75% Tuesday Partial
Tempus announced an expanded collaboration with Moderna and Merck on their melanoma vaccine candidate Wednesday morning, per Business Wire, and Investopedia grouped Moderna with Eli Lilly as healthcare outperformed. We could not confirm the Tempus news drove the move, which recovers more than half of Tuesday's loss.
Tue Oct 6
CEG
Constellation Energy +12.25% Tuesday ($267.62 → $300.40), −0.27% Wednesday ($299.59) Confirmed
The Google nuclear power agreement behind Tuesday's jump, per Invezz and GuruFocus last edition, held: Wednesday's volume fell to 7.3 million shares from 13.5 million.
How this list is built
  • Source: tofu-agent's October 7 batch (CEG, CIEN, CTVA, FIX, MRNA), with confidence scores of 0.33 to 0.44. Every signal was tagged "unexplained_move"; the attached discourse headlines, such as a GuruFocus valuation note, a 13F filing item and a sector roundup, were not treated as causes. Duplicate signals for each name were counted once. No October 8 batch had been written when this edition was built.
  • The batch's stated moves match Tuesday's closes (CEG +12.2%, CIEN +13.8%, CTVA +12.3%, FIX +6.1%, MRNA −7.8%), not Wednesday's, so we re-priced Wednesday from FMP data. Last edition's names (CHRW, MELI, NUE, PTC) were dropped because the new batch did not repeat them.
  • Two names have a confirmed catalyst (CTVA, CEG), plus Micron, which we added. Ciena and Moderna are partial, and Comfort Systems is flagged Unexplained.

Yields Set the Tone: Small Caps and Gold Took the Hit While Micron Led a Weak Chip Group

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq slipped 0.22% from records, but the Russell 2000 fell 1.31%, gold dropped to a two-month low and Tuesday's chip rotation stalled.

01
The Fed left another hike in play
The minutes showed unanimous backing for September's hike and most officials expecting another by year-end, with no date. December odds stood at 84%. The 10-year stayed near 5.3%, and tech was the only S&P 500 sector to gain since Sept. 1, per MarketWatch.
02
Tuesday's chip rotation stalled
AMD (−0.5%), Marvell (−0.8%) and Broadcom (+0.2%) gave back or held Tuesday's gains while Micron rose 4.1%. TSMC, Applied Materials and Qualcomm fell 1.8% to 2.2%, so SMH lost 1.18% and sits 6.6% under its June high.
03
Small caps and rate-sensitives led the fall
The Russell 2000 lost 1.31% and the Dow 0.66%. Only 46% of S&P 500 stocks sit above their 200-day average, per Seeking Alpha, so the records rest on a narrow group of tech names.
04
Gold lost its Tuesday bounce
GLD fell 1.67% to its lowest close since Aug. 4 and SLV 2.94% as the dollar rose 0.5%. Spot gold is at its lowest since Aug. 5, and GLD sits 9.6% below its 200-day average.
05
Oil faded on a diesel release
WTI fell $1.16 to $88.28 and Brent 38 cents to $100.20 after IEA members agreed to prioritize releasing diesel stocks, per CNBC. USO fell 0.69% after opening at $146.23.

Thursday's tests are jobless claims and PepsiCo's results before the open. A soft claims print would ease hike odds; a firm one would add to December's 84% and keep pressure on small caps, gold and the equipment names.

This week
Jobless claims and PepsiCo (before the open) and Delta results Thursday, with the 10-year near 5.3% and Hormuz headlines setting the tone. The Fed meets Oct. 27–28.
Claims soften and the 10-year stops rising
Records come back into range
Softer data would trim December's 84% hike odds and steady the dollar, giving gold and small caps room to recover.
Read-through: SPY above $781.62, SMH above $639.47, GLD above $385.22.
Data stays firm and the 10-year pushes higher
The pullback widens beyond small caps
With most officials expecting another hike and staff inflation at 3.8%, firm data could push yields up and pressure a narrow tech-led market.
Read-through: SPY under $773.61, SMH under $618.79, GLD under $374.23.
Base case
Stocks pulled back from Tuesday's records as the Fed's minutes kept another hike in play. Micron led a falling chip group, and gold fell to a two-month low. Thursday's claims data and PepsiCo's results come next.

Equities: SPY fell 0.24% to $777.22 and QQQ 0.25% to $757.73; SMH fell 1.18% to $625.03 while Micron rose 4.1%. The Russell 2000 lost 1.31%.

Commodities: GLD fell 1.67% to $375.88, a two-month low, and USO 0.69% to $143.91. Brent settled at $100.20.

FX & policy: USD/JPY closed at ¥157.99. The 10-year held near 5.3% and December hike odds were 84%.

The wildcard: Hormuz. The UKMTO has logged nine tanker incidents this month while the IEA moves to release diesel stocks, and Brent sits near $100.
