Debt-funded AI builders fell hardest
Oracle fell 5.6% to $135.56 and Nebius 7.4%, with CoreWeave down about 7% midday, per 24/7 Wall St. Benzinga tied the neocloud drop to a bitcoin slide and a 5.7% bond yield, which raise the cost of the debt these builders use.

Delta Reports Friday Before the Open After PepsiCo Cut Its EPS Guidance and Jobless Claims Held Under 200,000

The Fed's next policy test is the Oct. 27–28 meeting. Friday's one scheduled item we could verify is Delta's third-quarter report.

Thu Oct 8
AI
FT: OpenAI's annualized revenue near $50 billion Occurred
OpenAI told investors its run rate was close to $50 billion at the end of September, against about $70 billion previously reported, per TradingKey's summary of the FT. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 3.39%; Bloomberg's headline put the Nasdaq 100's drop at 1.4%.
Thu Oct 8
IRAN
Pentagon told to prepare for resumed combat operations Occurred
American media reported CENTCOM was told to complete preparations, per Euronews, with no date set. Brent rose above $105.20 and WTI about 5% intraday. We could not trace the report to a primary source.
Thu Oct 8
PEP
PepsiCoPepsiCo third-quarter results Occurred
Net revenue rose 5.6%, organic revenue 3.1%, reported EPS 17% and core EPS 2%. Core constant-currency EPS growth guidance was cut to 1%–2% from 4%–6%, per the company's 8-K. Shares rose 3.73% to $128.34 on 24.0 million shares, above the $123.47 52-week low. We did not confirm a beat against the $2.29 consensus.
Thu Oct 8
CLAIMS
Weekly jobless claims Occurred
Initial claims fell 2,000 to 197,000 against 200,000 expected, the fourth straight week under 200,000, with the four-week average at 198,000, per FXTribune citing Reuters' poll.
Fri Oct 9
DAL
Delta Air Lines third-quarter results, before the open Scheduled
Preview summaries from Alphastreet and TipRanks put consensus near $1.83 to $1.88 a share on about $18.83 billion of revenue, below management's $2.00–$2.50 guidance range. Options implied a move of about 6.4%. Delta fell 1.0% Thursday to $82.14. Last edition placed the report on Thursday, from TradingKey's preview; it had not reported.
Oct 27–28
FOMC
Fed policy meeting Scheduled
December hike odds were 84% Wednesday, per Reuters via Kitco. We found no Thursday update after the oil spike.
Flagged — unverified or single-sourced
  • No Friday pre-market data. FMP's aftermarket quotes, stamped about 8:30 p.m. ET Thursday, sit within 0.1% of the closes (SPY $774.17 bid against $773.93). Searches for Friday futures returned stale pieces about the Oct. 2 jobs report, and an Asia-markets search returned items dated other days, so none are used.
  • Index closes (S&P 500 7,765.36, Dow 51,231.64, Nasdaq 27,193.34) come from TradingKey and the Motley Fool, which agree. A Yahoo page carried the same closes under a July date with unrelated Samsung text, so we did not use it. The Motley Fool listed the 10-year at both 5.28% and 5.23%, so we say near 5.3%.
  • We did not open the FT article. The $50 billion and $70 billion figures come from TradingKey's summary; another summary said revenue was $20 billion lower, which matches. TradingKey also cited an accounting difference with Anthropic that we did not verify and omit. The Motley Fool blamed rising rates and geopolitics, so the selloff likely had more than one cause.
  • Other search summaries conflicted with FMP closes (Micron down 6%, AMD down 2%) or cited a New York Times report on an OpenAI IPO delay we could not confirm, and were discarded. Chip moves here are from FMP's quote endpoint against Wednesday's closes. FMP's chart endpoint showed SMH at −1.37%, which disagrees with close-to-close math (−2.84%), so every daily move is computed from closes.
  • Oil: we found no Thursday settlement prices. Euronews' Brent and WTI levels are early-afternoon Europe; the Motley Fool said oil was above $102 without naming the contract. USO's +2.55% is computed from FMP closes. Gold's $4,158.90 is a single Motley Fool figure.
  • Claims (197,000) come from search summaries of FXTribune and Techflow, not the Labor Department. Delta's consensus differs by source ($1.83 in Alphastreet's headline, $1.88 in another summary); the Friday date is from three previews.

Nebius Falls 7% With Debt-Funded AI Builders and Rocket Lab Slides With Space Stocks, While Micron and PepsiCo Move on Their Own News

The newest tofu-agent batch, dated Thursday, flagged CAT, MRNA, MSTR, NBIS and RKLB. Its stated moves are Wednesday's, so each name is re-priced for Thursday from FMP closes and checked against dated news. Micron and PepsiCo were added by us.

Micron −4.79% ($1,088.00 → $1,035.84) Confirmed
It fell with the chip group after the FT's OpenAI report and closed below Tuesday's $1,045.56, giving back all of Wednesday's $3,000-target jump. It traded 28.9 million shares between $1,032.10 and $1,088.50. Sandisk fell 4.9%. Not in the tofu-agent batch; we added it.

PepsiCo +3.73% ($123.73 → $128.34) Confirmed
Third-quarter results and a guidance reset came before the open; volume was 24.0 million shares against 13.3 million Wednesday. See Catalysts. Not in the batch; we added it.
Thu Oct 8
NBIS
Nebius −7.35% ($237.15 → $219.71), after −5.09% Wednesday Partial
24/7 Wall St. reported a selloff in debt-funded AI builders, with CoreWeave down 7% and Oracle 5%, and Benzinga tied it to a bitcoin slide and long yields. We found no Nebius-specific item, so the cause is the group's.
Thu Oct 8
RKLB
Rocket Lab −4.89% ($71.92 → $68.40), after −4.18% Wednesday Unexplained
24/7 Wall St. grouped it with space stocks falling, AST SpaceMobile −7% and Planet Labs −5%, but attributed AST's drop to a rival's regulatory win, which does not apply to Rocket Lab. We found no company-specific catalyst.
Thu Oct 8
CAT
Caterpillar −2.17% ($813.83 → $796.18), after −5.75% Wednesday Partial
Wednesday's drop was tied to long yields at a two-decade high, per 24/7 Wall St., and an FTC and USDA request for public input on the farm-equipment market, per Barron's. We found no new Thursday item; Zacks noted it fell below its 50-day average.
Thu Oct 8
MSTR
Strategy −1.24% ($153.37 → $151.47), after −6.79% Wednesday Partial
Wednesday's fall followed Tom Lee saying Bitmine's Ethereum buying spree is about to end, with crypto treasury stocks down, per 24/7 Wall St. Thursday, miners lagged bitcoin and Strategy slipped; FMP showed bitcoin down 1.9% to $81,709 late Thursday.
Thu Oct 8
MRNA
Moderna +0.26% ($196.48 → $197.00), after +4.81% Wednesday Partial
Flat Thursday on 37.4 million shares. Wednesday's gain coincided with the Tempus collaboration news and a healthcare bounce. Zacks wrote about Moderna's Nasdaq-100 entry; we could not date it from the snippet.
How this list is built
  • Source: tofu-agent's October 8 batch (CAT, MRNA, MSTR, NBIS, RKLB; ten signal files, duplicates counted once), with confidence scores of 0.22 to 0.29. Every signal was tagged "unexplained_move"; the attached discourse headlines, such as a Zacks closing-price note, a GuruFocus valuation item and a Motley Fool stock comparison, were not treated as causes. No October 9 batch had been written when this edition was built.
  • The batch's stated moves match Wednesday's closes (CAT −5.7%, MSTR −6.8%, NBIS −5.1%, RKLB −4.2%, MRNA +4.8%), not Thursday's, so we re-priced Thursday from FMP data. Last edition's CEG, CIEN, CTVA and FIX were dropped because the new batch did not repeat them.
  • Micron and PepsiCo have confirmed catalysts and were added by us. Nebius, Caterpillar, Strategy and Moderna are partial, and Rocket Lab is flagged Unexplained.

One Report, Three Channels: AI Revenue Doubts, Debt-Funded Builders and an Oil Spike

The S&P 500 fell 0.47% and the Nasdaq 1.25%, but the Dow rose 0.10% as the selling stayed in chips and AI-linked names.

01
AI revenue doubts hit the chip chain
The FT's OpenAI revenue report coincided with a 3.39% drop in the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index, 29 of 30 members lower. Micron fell 4.8%, Broadcom 4.3% and AMD 3.9%; SMH closed at $607.27, its lowest since Sept. 29.
02
Debt-funded builders fell hardest
Oracle fell 5.6% and Nebius 7.4%. 24/7 Wall St. and Benzinga tied the neocloud selloff to financing costs, with a 5.7% bond yield and a bitcoin slide; Strategy fell 1.2% and bitcoin 1.9%.
03
The Dow and Apple held
The Dow rose 0.10% and Apple 1.11% while Microsoft fell 1.35%, per TradingKey. PepsiCo rose 3.7% even after cutting its EPS growth guidance.
04
Oil jumped on strike preparations
Brent rose above $105 and WTI about 5% intraday on reports of U.S. preparations to resume combat operations against Iran. USO rose 2.55%. Higher energy costs keep inflation, and December's 84% hike odds from Wednesday, in focus.
05
Gold bounced but stays under trend
GLD rose 0.73% to $378.62 and sits 8.9% under its 200-day average after 29 straight closes below it. SLV fell 0.69%.

Friday's test is Delta before the open, with oil higher and consensus below the low end of management's $2.00–$2.50 guidance. A miss would add a fuel-cost story to the chip selloff; a beat would show demand holding.

06
Where This Leaves Positioning

SMH $607.27

This week
Delta reports Friday before the open, with Iran headlines and the 10-year near 5.3% setting the tone. The Fed meets Oct. 27–28.
The OpenAI worry fades and oil stops climbing
Chips retrace part of Thursday's drop
If the revenue report proves a one-day scare and Iran headlines cool, semis could recover and take pressure off the Nasdaq.
Read-through: SPY above $777.09, SMH above $625.90, USO under $145.00.
Chip selling continues and oil keeps rising
The pullback widens past AI names
With oil higher and Wednesday's minutes keeping another hike in play, more doubt about AI revenue could extend the drop in a market led by a narrow group of tech names.
Read-through: SPY under $770.44, SMH under $600.32, USO above $150.48.
Base case
Stocks fell for a second day as a reported OpenAI revenue shortfall hit chips and debt-funded AI names, and oil jumped on Iran strike preparations. Delta's results come before Friday's open.

Equities: SPY fell 0.42% to $773.93 and QQQ 1.34% to $747.58; SMH fell 2.84% to $607.27, Micron 4.8% and Oracle 5.6%. The Dow rose 0.10%.

Commodities: USO rose 2.55% to $147.58 and GLD 0.73% to $378.62; SLV fell 0.69%.

FX & policy: USD/JPY closed at ¥157.95. The 10-year held near 5.3%, and December hike odds were last seen at 84% on Wednesday.

The wildcard: Iran. Reports of Pentagon preparations pushed Brent above $105 intraday, with Hormuz tanker attacks and a Gulf of Mexico storm already limiting supply.
